Every now and then a guitar comes through the workshop that reminds you just how much potential an instrument can still have underneath years of neglect.
This particular guitar was picked up by a client from a car boot sale. At first glance it looked promising, but once he got it home and plugged it in, the problems quickly became obvious. None of the electronics were functioning properly, the controls were crackly and noisy, the hardware was heavily tarnished, there was no jack plate fitted, and overall the guitar was in an extremely dirty condition.
Honestly, the before pictures still do not fully show just how filthy the instrument really was when it first arrived at the workshop.
The Initial Assessment
When the guitar arrived at RG Guitar Tech in Nottingham, it was clear this was going to require far more than a basic setup.
Issues included:
- Faulty electronics
- Crackly and oxidised potentiometers
- Missing jack plate
- Dirty wiring and poor connections
- Rust and tarnish across hardware
- Heavy dirt build-up across the finish and fretboard
- General lack of maintenance over many years
Despite the condition, the guitar still had potential and deserved a second chance rather than being thrown away or stripped for parts.
Deep Clean and Restoration Process
The first stage of the restoration involved a complete deep clean of the instrument. The body was carefully cleaned using compound and polish to safely remove years of grime and bring the finish back to life.
The electronics were then stripped back and inspected thoroughly. Wiring was checked and re-soldered where necessary, the controls were cleaned to eliminate crackling and noise, and upgraded pickups were installed and wired correctly. A brand-new jack plate was also fitted to replace the missing hardware.
The aim with this kind of work is not just to make the guitar functional again, but to make it feel inspiring to play.
The Final Result
The transformation was huge.
What arrived as a dirty, neglected, barely functioning instrument now looks and sounds fantastic. The upgraded pickups completely changed the character of the guitar, giving it clarity, output and reliability it simply did not have before.
Most importantly, the client now has a guitar that feels exciting to pick up and play again.
