A more precise guitar setup in Nottingham

I’m upgrading my fretwork bench with three specialist StewMac tools. They’re on their way, and each has a specific role in a careful, measurement-led setup.

Proper’s Relief Gauge

State-of-the-art full-neck digital measurement. Unlike a conventional gauge that checks relief at one point, Proper’s adjusts to the instrument’s scale length and sweeps the entire neck. Accurate to 0.0005 inch, it helps me identify high and low areas, twist and fall-away—giving me repeatable evidence for more accurate truss-rod, action and fretwork decisions. On acoustic guitars, it can also measure how the top moves under string tension.

Fretbar Understring Leveler

Some necks do not move in a perfectly even arc when full string tension is reapplied. A fret level that appears correct with the strings removed can therefore still reveal a small hump, twist or high area after the guitar is tuned to pitch. The under-string Fretbar lets me check and selectively level those problem areas while the neck is under its real playing tension.

Centered Z-File

After leveling, it reshapes the fret crown by working the sides of the fret, helping preserve the leveled top and a consistent string-contact point.

The result is a far more complete picture of what your neck and frets are actually doing. Proper’s maps the whole neck, the Fretbar lets me correct tension-dependent fret problems at pitch, and the Centered Z-File restores accurate crowns. Combined with precise nut-slot, action and intonation measurements, this supports more consistent, cleaner-playing and genuinely player-specific setups. The final achievable result will always depend on the condition of the instrument.
