When it comes to a great guitar setup, feel and experience matter — but on their own, they’re not enough.
Every guitar is a collection of tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre. Small differences in neck relief, nut height, or string action can be the difference between a guitar that almost plays well and one that feels effortless in your hands.
That’s why at RG Guitar Tech, I combine experience with precision measurement tools, ensuring every setup is consistent, repeatable, and tailored to your playing style.
Feel Is Important — Accuracy Is Essential
Many setups rely heavily on sight, feel, and general adjustment. That approach can work — but it also leaves room for variation.
I take a different approach.
I measure first, adjust second, and fine-tune last.
This means your guitar isn’t set up to “about right” — it’s set up to exact numbers, checked and verified throughout the process.
Precision You Can Measure (Not Guess)
During every setup, I use professional-grade measuring tools, including:
Neck Relief Accuracy
Measured with a dedicated imperial neck relief gauge, accurate to:
0.001″ (one thousandth of an inch)
Typical working tolerances:
- 0.005″ – 0.010″ neck relief depending on the guitar
- Checked at the 7th–8th fret under string tension
- every guitar is different
That level of accuracy simply can’t be achieved reliably by eye or feel alone.
Nut Slot Precision
The nut is one of the most important (and most overlooked) parts of a setup.
I use top-tier branded nut files, sized correctly for each string gauge, allowing me to cut nut slots to precise depths without binding, buzzing, or premature wear.
This ensures:
- Comfortable fretting in first position
- Accurate intonation
- Smooth tuning stability
String Height Set to the Guitar — Not a Guess
String action is measured and adjusted using calibrated tools to ensure:
- Clean bends without choking
- Comfortable playability across the neck
- Action that suits the fretboard radius and playing style
Whether you want it low and fast or slightly higher and expressive, it’s set deliberately — not approximately.
Treated Like My Own Guitar
Every instrument that comes across my bench is treated with the same care and attention I give my own guitars.
No rushing.
No shortcuts.
No “one-size-fits-all” setups.
Just careful measurement, thoughtful adjustment, and proper testing before it leaves the workshop.
