If your acoustic guitar feels hard to play, has high action, rattles or buzzes, a professional acoustic guitar setup in Nottingham can make a major difference. At RG Guitar Tech, every instrument is measured carefully and adjusted to suit the guitar, the strings and the way you play.

What an acoustic guitar setup includes
An acoustic setup is about balancing neck relief, nut-slot height and saddle height so the instrument plays comfortably without unwanted fret buzz. My standard setup is £50 plus strings and includes:
- Neck relief measured with a dedicated gauge
- Action measured accurately at the 12th fret
- Nut slots checked and adjusted with genuine Hosco nut files
- Saddle height and contact checked
- Frets checked for buzzing or uneven areas
- Tuning, hardware and general playability checks
- Final playing test after adjustment
I keep popular acoustic guitar strings in stock, or you are welcome to bring your own preferred make and gauge.

Correct nut-slot work with Hosco files
The nut has a big effect on tuning, first-position comfort and open-string buzz. I use genuine premium Hosco nut files in the correct sizes rather than improvised tools. This allows each slot to be cut cleanly and accurately for the string gauge fitted to the guitar.
Lowering or raising acoustic guitar action
When the action needs lowering at the bridge, I remove the saddle and use a dedicated mechanical sander to take a carefully measured amount from its underside while keeping it flat and square. This is more controlled than uneven hand sanding and helps maintain good contact in the saddle slot.
If an acoustic saddle needs to be raised, I can make a custom carbon-fibre shim where appropriate. A properly fitted shim provides consistent support across the saddle instead of relying on scraps of card or loose material.

Precision neck-relief measurements
Neck relief is measured rather than guessed. The reading helps determine whether the truss rod needs adjustment and prevents the saddle from being lowered to compensate for a neck that is not set correctly. Small, measured changes are made before the action is checked again.

Acoustic guitar crack repairs
I also inspect and repair cracks in acoustic guitar tops and bodies. Because every crack is different, the repair is assessed individually, including its position, movement, age and whether the wood needs to be stabilised before repair. Get in touch with clear photographs and I can advise on the next step.

A recent Yamaha acoustic setup
After I lowered the saddle and corrected the neck on a Yamaha TAG3C, the owner said it was “so great to play now” and recommended RG Guitar Tech for guitar repairs and setups.
