I’m Rob Greco, the guitar tech behind RG Guitar Tech. I’ve been helping Nottingham players get more from their instruments since 2007. My approach combines hands-on experience with precision measuring tools, because a setup should feel right to the player and be measured carefully along the way.
Before I adjust anything, I ask how you play: your preferred tuning and string gauge, how hard you pick, and whether you want low, fast action or a little more height for a stronger attack. There is no single setup that suits everyone. I use measurements as a reliable starting point, then fine-tune the guitar for you.
Why I measure neck relief
Neck relief affects how the strings vibrate and how the guitar feels across the neck. I use a Crimson Neck Relief Gauge with a dial indicator, zeroed on a flat surface, to read relief in thousandths of an inch. That gives me a clear, repeatable measurement while I make and check truss-rod adjustments.
Eyeballing the neck or sliding a card under a string can give a quick rough impression, but it does not provide the same calibrated, fine-scale reading or a measurement I can record and compare. I prefer to measure, adjust, recheck under string tension, and then play-test the result. Precision tools support experience; they don’t replace the judgement needed to set the guitar up for its player.
Digital nut-slot measurements and premium nut files
The nut has a big effect on how comfortable the first few frets feel. I use a digital nut-slotting gauge to measure each string’s height over the first fret. This helps me see whether a slot needs careful adjustment and lets me recheck the clearance as I work.
When a nut slot needs filing, I use premium, string-sized nut files to shape it gradually and accurately. The right file helps me make a clean slot suited to the string gauge, then check that the string sits and moves properly. Correct nut height can make first-position chords easier to fret and help avoid tuning problems caused by slots that are too high, too low, or poorly shaped.
Accurate measurements, set to your playing style
Relief, nut height, string action, bridge or saddle position, and intonation all work together. I measure and adjust the relevant parts as a system, then play-test across the neck. A player who picks lightly may prefer a different action from someone with a heavier attack; alternate tunings and string gauges can also change what works best.
My aim is not to force every guitar to the same figures. It is to give you a comfortable, dependable setup that suits your instrument and the way you play, with key measurements recorded in your setup report.
